JForce Next Steps

What changes were made in this version?
We hear this question all of the time. What changes were made in this version? What new features have been added? Was bug X fixed in release Y? You can always find a detailed outline of which bugs were fixed or which new features have been introduced into JForce by taking a peek at the changelog. We do our best to post updates to the changelog soon after a new release is made available on the site. There has been a link to the changelog on the downloads page, but it doesn't exactly jump out at you. Hopefully this blog entry will let a few more people know about the changelog who were not aware of it before.

JForce Security Release
Hello everyone! JForce was recently added to the Joomla! Vulnerable Extensions List (VEL). We have tracked down the issue that placed us there and are in the process of getting back on the Joomla! Extension Directory. Everyone that has not upgraded to the latest security release, JForce PM v1.5r1362, should do so immediately. This is a security release and most users should immediately upgrade unless there are specific reasons that they cannot. This release can be installed directly over other 1.5x releases.

JForce Needs YOU!

Please excuse the similarity with James Montgomery Flagg's war propaganda. We aren't recruiting you for our military... we just want to discuss the next wave of changes to JForce with you.

You may have noticed some activity as of late in the JForce Community Discussion forum. We have selected a several important areas that you have been asking for to include in our next major release. To give a little background on why we are doing this, here is my blurb on all of my forum posts:

JForce was originally written to suit the needs of our own company. Since then, we have added many features that would be beneficial to our users but we decided on the parameters of those features. After customizing versions of JForce for various clients over the last few years, we have really noticed how each company has different project management needs. Between your company's field, number of employees, clientele, and many other factors, no two businesses are exactly the same. Because of this, we would like to ask for your input on these new features in order for them to better suit your company's needs.

Development on this release will commence after we have finalized the stable release of JForce for Joomla! 1.6. These features will be added to both the Joomla! 1.5 and 1.6 versions of JForce.

Please head over to the forum to discuss the new features. We want JForce to work for everyone, so your input is much appreciated!

JForce for Joomla! 1.6

We had originally anticipated the release of a Joomla! 1.6 compatible version of JForce for the first week of June. This date has been pushed back in order to allow for improved functionality and testing. Much of the javascript is being updated to be more efficient with MooTools 1.3 which is included with Joomla! 1.6 (and, unfortunately, not backwards compatible with MooTools 1.11).

While we realize that many of you are eager to move to Joomla! 1.6, we also want to make sure the transition to this platform is as smooth as possible.

Running periodic tasks in JForce

We get a lot of questions regarding the Email Support system within JForce. Since the support system needs to periodically check an email inbox, you have to manually set up a cron job on your server. The cron job will run a task in JForce at any interval you define when setting up the cron job. Unfortunately, we are unable to automate this process as it requires logging into your account and the methods for creating a cron job vary depending on which company is hosting your website.

Before we dive too deep into cron jobs, we should outline what setup needs to be done within the Joomla! admin panel. From the Joomla! admin panel, open the JForce Control Panel (hover over the Components menu and select the JForce PM link). The top left icon in the JForce Control Panel is the General Configuration. Click the iMac icon to open the JForce General Configuration. Select the second tab labeled "Email". In the Email Account for Support Tickets section, provide the details for your support email account. The NOREPLY fields are optional. If you are unsure about what each field is, you can hover over the information icon to get more details about that field.

Once the Email Support system is set up in Joomla!, you are ready to create the cron job. Please remember that the email system will not be able to check your support inbox until you have configured cron job. A new writeup has been added to the FAQ section of our Help site. You can view the cron job writeup by clicking the Help menu link at the top of the page or directly from http://help.myjforce.com/cron-job-faqs.html.

If you do not have access to cPanel or to create a cron job on your site, you will need to contact your hosting company for support. The JForce Reminder section of the FAQ is only applicable for installations of JForce PM v1.5r1300 and later.
